Sandvik piston pump repair

Sandvik piston pump repair: repair, exchange or replace, and what each costs

When a pump dies on a drill rig, the part isn’t what hurts. The idle machine is. So the real question about Sandvik piston pump repair cost is which option gets you working again for the least money overall: repair, exchange or replace. Advance Hydraulic Works imports and trades hydraulic pumps and does pump repair from Delhi NCR. Here’s how we’d go through it with you.

Three options

Sandvik itself talks about replacing, repairing or exchanging key components, and that’s a handy way to split the decision.

  • Repair. Your own pump is stripped, fixed, tested and sent back. It suits limited wear, and it suits you if you can wait.
  • Exchange. You hand over the failed pump and get a rebuilt one. It’s quicker, but you need to know what was done to it.
  • Replace. You buy a new or used pump. This is the fastest route and usually the dearest.

Which one wins depends on downtime, the pump’s condition and what’s available.

What goes wrong inside

A lot of the pumps on Sandvik rigs are axial piston pumps. Listings often show them as Rexroth A10VO pumps for the DT920i, and some are double pumps, an A10VO71 and an A10VO45 in one housing. That means the repair may follow the pump maker’s data and not only the rig’s part number.

The usual warning signs are weak flow, hot oil, noise, shaft leaks and metal in the oil. A leaking shaft seal on its own is a cheap fix. Weak flow with heat usually points to worn rotating parts.

What a proper Sandvik hydraulic pump repair service includes

Whoever does the work, a good Sandvik hydraulic pump repair service should do these things:

  1. Identify the exact pump from the nameplate, not just the machine number.
  2. Strip it and inspect the whole rotating group.
  3. Measure the wear and tell you plainly which parts are worn.
  4. Replace the worn parts and every seal.
  5. Rebuild it in clean conditions.
  6. Test flow, pressure and control response on a proper test stand.
  7. Hand you the test results.

Ask any shop, us included, to confirm these steps before you accept a quote.

Why the test stand matters

Testing is where cheap repairs cut corners. One US repair centre says it tests pumps to meet or exceed Sandvik’s specifications, on a stand rated up to 450 horsepower. That gives you an idea of the equipment real testing needs.

Take a double pump with 71 cc and 45 cc sections running at 1,800 rpm. Full-stroke flow is about 209 litres per minute. At 250 bar, the hydraulic power works out to 250 × 209 ÷ 600, roughly 87 kW, or about 117 horsepower. A shop that can’t load a pump like that can’t prove its repair. This is illustrative arithmetic, not a spec sheet, so check it against your actual pump data.

What moves the Sandvik piston pump repair cost

No honest page can give you one number. These are the things that change it:

  • Extent of wear. A seal job and a full rotating-group rebuild are very different jobs.
  • Single or double pump. Two sections mean more parts and more testing.
  • Parts availability. Hard-to-find parts add cost and time.
  • Control type. Pressure and flow controls have to be set and tested.
  • Testing and turnaround. Proper testing takes time, and rush jobs cost extra.
  • Cause of failure. If dirty oil killed the pump, the repair has to deal with that too.

Don’t pick on price alone. A cheap repair with no test is a gamble.

Inspect, test, compare

Start with photos, the nameplate and the symptoms. If you go ahead, a strip-down report follows. Measure flow and case drain before and after if you can. Then lay repair, exchange and replace side by side, with downtime counted in.

A worked example

These numbers are made up, in made-up units, so don’t read them as prices. Say repair costs 10 units and takes 8 days. Exchange costs 14 and takes 3 days. Replacement costs 24 and takes 2 days. Downtime costs 4 units a day.

Repair comes to 10 + 32 = 42. Exchange comes to 14 + 12 = 26. Replace comes to 24 + 8 = 32. Exchange wins.

Now drop downtime to 1 unit a day. Repair totals 18, exchange 17 and replace 26. Repair and exchange are nearly level. Count the downtime before you choose.

Steps to take

  1. Photograph the pump, the nameplate and any leaks before you put off anything.
  2. Note the overall model code, the component numbers and the machine’s serial number.
  3. Write down the symptoms: weak glide, heat, noise or leaks.
  4. Rule out the simple stuff: oil level, filters, suction line and strainer.
  5. Send everything to Advance Hydraulic Works and ask for an assessment.
  6. Ask for repair, exchange and replacement options, each with a turnaround time.
  7. Get written quotes that cowl components, checking out and warranty.
  8. After the restore, refit the pump, bleed it, test the rotation and start at low pressure.

The not unusual errors are deciding on on charge by myself, skipping the check, and refitting onto a reason no one constant.

FAQs

How much does Sandvik piston pump repair cost?

It depends on the wear, the parts, whether it’s a single or double pump, and the testing. Any fixed figure would be a guess. Send photos and the model code to Advance Hydraulic Works and ask for an assessment.

What does a Sandvik hydraulic pump repair service include?

The pump is identified, stripped and inspected, the wear is measured, worn parts and seals are replaced, and it’s rebuilt clean and tested under load. Ask for the test results.

Is Sandvik piston pump repair worth it?

Often, yes, whilst the wear is limited and you can wait. If downtime is costly, an trade or a alternative can fee less average.
